As the girls started their dance competition season, I went into it with a new mission; I had a photography project in mind. Dance photography has been around a long, long time. Many photographers focus on the pretty lines the dancers create with their bodies and, I admit, I love that part of a dancer's art. But, I wanted to tell a deeper story...a behind the scenes story. Unlike the behind-the-scenes, Hollywood-reality of Dance Moms, I wanted to show the truth most dancers live; the ones who treat dance like a team sport rather than a path to fame.
There is sweat and pain; injuries and ice (lots of ice); friendship and competition; nerves and adrenaline; and, finally, victory and defeat.
Here is my most recent contribution to my project. The behind-the-scenes of getting ready in a hotel room, working together to create hairstyles and apply make-up. Jessie teased Domenica's hair so much that it literally took two applications of conditioner and lots of brushing to get out.
And in those moments of preparation the nervous energy sits just below the surface. I found this quote from Twyla Tharp and I think it's perfect:
"There is an energy that comes through the release of tension that is laughter."
